Canon: Voltron: Legendary Defender
Canon Point: Season 3 Episode 2, after Keith gets the Black Lion
Age: 18 (His 18th birthday was at Aefenglom!)
History: Here and an episode list
Personality:
Lance at a glance is a loud, fun-loving, sociable guy with a bright personality. He's good with people and holding conversation, even with his immature sense of humor, and he always tries his best in everything he does. He can keep the energy in the room really high and lift people's spirits simply by being himself.
Being himself also entails having a bit of arrogance and cockiness -- at least on the surface. In the earlier seasons of Voltron, Lance likes to talk big about himself and his abilities. He likes to brag about how good he is with women when in actuality, most of his flirting attempts are met with rejection. In the first episode, Lance claimed that people call him "The Tailor" when it comes to piloting because of how he "threads the needle" when in actuality he was pretty bad at it. He casually flirts with women even during missions, much to his team's chagrin. This bigheadedness is also displayed in his interactions with Keith, in which he teases, provokes, and angers the latter, sometimes for no real reason other than to be petty. This could come from a place of jealousy, as Lance was only promoted to Fighter Class because Keith was dismissed from the Garrison. Keith was a natural pilot canonically and at the top of his class, and Lance...wasn't.
That's because beneath all of Lance's bravado lies a deeply insecure boy who doubts his abilities. He feels like he needs to prove himself so he has a place to belong. He's unsure of himself while he's a Paladin and thinks he isn't needed because of he believes he isn't good enough. In Season 3 Episode 2, Lance is hoping that he'll bond with the Black Lion so he can prove himself as the new leader of Voltron. Unfortunately, that doesn't happen because the Black Lion chooses Keith as her new Paladin. Subsequently, Lance takes Keith's former lion, Red, and Allura becomes the new Blue Paladin. A few episodes later, after Shiro returns to the team, Lance goes to Keith to talk about his insecurities about being a Paladin and reveals that he doesn't feel he's needed. He even goes as far as saying he'll step aside for the team's sake; with Shiro back in Black, he assumes Keith wants his Red Lion back and he feels that Allura is a much better fit for the Blue Lion.
Surprisingly, what does happen even through all of that mess is that Lance consoles Keith after the latter doubts Black's decision. While it's clear he wished Black chose him, he puts his pride aside and tells Keith that Black wouldn't choose anyone she didn't feel was worthy. This shows that he's grown to respect Keith as a fellow teammate and leader, and it's also a sign of maturity. Being a Paladin of Voltron has gotten Lance to put his pettiness aside and learn to work as a team. Once Shiro disappears at the end of Season 2, he's a lot less antagonistic and more focused on being a good teammate. He also discovers what loving someone really means through his budding relationship with Allura throughout the series and stops his casual flirting altogether -- though at this canonpoint, they haven't quite gotten there just yet, as his feelings are only one-sided. It's worth noting anyway because it shows that Lance is capable of change and learning and growing.
At his core, Lance is a kind, caring individual. Aside from his bonding moments with Keith, he also provides valuable advice and consolation to Allura several times throughout the series. He's empathetic, a good listener, and great at picking people back up when they're at their lowest. In Season 3 Episode 1, Lance is the first to approach Keith while the latter is mourning the loss of Shiro; he lets Keith know that they're all right there with him, missing Shiro, and convinces Keith that they have to move forward. He's not always the best at sharing how he feels with others, but his moments of vulnerability come from a place of love, whether it's homesickness and missing his family or having unrequited feelings for the Princess.
While he may get made fun of a lot during the series for being "dumb", he's great at coming up with solutions on the fly during battle. He may not be on Pidge and Hunk's levels of tech-savviness, but he's extremely perceptive and intelligent in his own right. In Season 8 Episode 5, when the team was lost and couldn't find their way, Lance used a landmark -- a volcano -- as a directional tool. (While this didn't impress Pidge, it certainly impressed Hunk and Allura!) This may be over a year ahead of Lance's canon point, but it's still relevant because his observational skills start from early on, too, especially once Keith starts leading Voltron. While he isn't afraid to call Keith out on his shortcomings, he's also supportive, attentive, and trusting in and off of the battlefield, making him an excellent right hand man. Once Keith's leadership starts improving, so does Lance's trust in him, though he also exhibits these qualities under Shiro's leadership.
Lance may be a little obnoxious and riddled with insecurity issues, but he's also a great friend and a valuable teammate. While he doesn't realize his own value, it's clear that Lance is worthy of being a Paladin not only for his abilities, but for his kindness and bravery as well. He's come a long way from the start of the series, even three seasons in; and even though he still drives people crazy, they can't help but love him for the sweet, lovable goofball he is.
Abilities & Skills: Lance is most notable for being a natural sharpshooter. He's got impeccable aim and is even referred to as Voltron's sharpshooter in canon! Lance is also an incredibly quick thinker and can make decisions even in the midst of battle. He also displayed prowess when his bayard transformed into a broadsword. His piloting skills have improved drastically and he's capable of flying mechs now.
Also, he's the master of bad pickup lines. That counts, right?
Inventory/Companions: Just his Blue Paladin Armor and his bayard.
Choice: Witch
Reason: So. The last time Lance was here, he was a Merrow. Being a Witch would put him in uncharted territory once again and give him a new goal to work towards. He already learned how to adjust to his Merrow form and learned how to fight within melee range; I think it's time for him to start learning magic and all its different forms, now. He'll work hard at it, and he may even be more attuned to it than he would be if he were a Monster again. With magic, he can actually pew pew things more easily.
Sample: Here and here, both from Lance's previous Aefenglom run.
